The Flowers on the Razorwire DVD series seeks to push the
synergy of comic book property and short film, in much the
same way that HBO's successful translation of the 1950s EC
comic book Tales From The Crypt revolutionized cable television
horror programming.
In the 1990s, Hart D. Fisher published a series of anthology
comic books that featured Flower, a sadistic dominatrix who
hunted her prey through the sleazy, Los Angeles sex trades.
The premise was simple; instead of a rotting old corpse introducing
the edgy tales, Flower was hotter than hell and any man would
want her--at any price.
The price, however, was that once Flower had her prey where
she wanted, things went bad for the unwitting victim, and
fast. Flower wasn't just pleased by the domination of her
playmates, she demanded something more than just their adulation
and groveling. She wanted a story, a *scary* story. And it
had better be suitably frightening to get her aroused because
if not, the penalty was a horrifying end to the storyteller's
life tale.
So began the Flowers on the Razorwire film series. The first
half hour episode was shot for Japanese publisher/producers
DK Publishing in tandem with Bunkasha Publishing and has now
been released in North America and Europe. The half hour first
installment tells the story of true crime author Douglas Shanks
(cameo appearance by author Joseph M. Monks), who is penning
a serial killer screenplay for a large, Hollywood studio.
Shanks is a Hollywood bad-boy now, and in his private life,
he likes to be treated like one. When his ad in the L.A. Weekly
seeking a partner who can really "handle the scary stuff,"
is answered by the series figurehead, however, Shanks discovers
that his screenplays about true crime are nothing compared
to the real deal.
Tied to a table in elaborate rope bondage and with needles
driven into his flesh, Shanks gets his choice--tell a story
that satisfies his torturer, or die very, very slowly. Shanks
responds by telling the tale of Yuko, an Asian woman living
alone in a Los Angeles apartment building who becomes trapped
on an elevator with a boiler repair man who may not be what
he seems. In fact, he just may be the city's most notorious
serial killer in decades, surpassing Manson and Ramirez and
all the rest. Yuko is suspicious, but things begin to intensify
the more the repair man discusses the serial killer's prowess.
Is he impressed by it? Or is he really bragging about it...
The first DVD of Flowers on the Razorwire comes with a 16
page mini comic book, which tells two more grisly stories
to fill out the packaging. A music video, director's reel
and Making of... featurette round out the video content.
